Hotels: Stayed at the Kenya Bay Beach Hotel. We booked the hotel directly through reservations @ Kenyabay.com, got an excellent rate, and they also threw in free transfers both ways!!!. Had 7 nights at the beach hotel, situated on the north coast and right smack in the middle of the world famous Bamburi Beach, also located within walking distance along the beach of some really nice restaurants and night clubs, and Ice cream parlours!!! Best Icecream I have tasted. At the hotel, is an inhouse diving centre which caters to both beginers and professional divers. I took a one day course in the swimming pool, before embarking on a dive in the shallow waters of the coral gardens - absolutely breathtaking!!!
I would say the hotel is a good 3 *. These rooms are simple, but pleasantly furnished. Bathrooms are OK and clean. All rooms had a/c and a balcony. We stayed in the standard rooms, which were OK, there is also a choice of deluxe rooms, which were bigger and better, but at a premium.
Since the hotel arranged the transfers, and also helped us to get local taxis at reasonable prices, moving around wasn't much of a problem. In fact, MBA taxi's were pretty safe and the drivers extremely friendly and informative. If you don't manage to get a pre-arranged transfer, a taxi ride from the airport to the hotel should cost you no more than £12.00, a distance of almost 20 miles.
Entertainment: You have to be careful on which water you drink, We were recommended a brand called Keringet. The Tamaring Seafood Restaurant is a must. About 10 minutes away ( £7.00 by taxi). This restaurant is located on the creek, with a view to the old town of Mombassa - Lovely experience. While the Tamarind was quite costly, the food in Kenya is relatively cheap. Our favourite hangout at the Kenya Bay was the Frangipani Bar and Restaurant, which overloooks the Indian Ocean and has a great relaxed ambience. The Chicken with Pouissin Sauce is definately a dish you will get hooked on.
Shopping: Just close to the hotel is a new shopping mall called the Nakkumaat. You can buy virtually anything here at great prices - rather like a Tesco Superstore. weird! but cool!
